Explaining the Art Design (With Daniel)

Hello!

I am Daniel, one of the art people for Deep Space Diner. I am responsible for characters, ingredient's, recipe's, character's and anything else I can help our other artist with. I'm also our concept artist. In this devlog  I am here to talk about the artistic style for our game!

The first step was style and colour palette.  For the style we decided to go with a cartoony style that I had used several times before. Pictured below is an example of this. I simplified the style down a tad so me and our other artist could keep consistency. For this game I tried to make highlights circular because aliens like circles. The palette was chosen to look spacey and pastelish, I didn't chose this and all the credit goes to Marika, our other artist, as she is way more talented with colour than me. To break down the style its basically just cartoony with little lines thrown around. That's it...

Next was concepting designs. The alien you see all over this page was the first thing designed for the game. From there I spread out and started trying new things. I prefer to draw with pen on paper so I started there. I drew vegetables and some characters first. The carrot was the first crop done. The idea was to take earth crops and make them look funny or strange. Like a slime tomato or a radioactive carrot. For all things in this game I start this way. Most of the customers are just doodles I do when im bored turned into finished pieces because alien's come in all shapes and sizes. Other than Cabbage Chan...She is iconic.  Below are a few of these concepts.

Apologies for the crusty and blurry art! I try my best!

Next I take the paper sketches and then sketch them on my preferred  software which is Krita. I prefer this software as I despise the lack of scroll wheel zooming on photoshop. I decide on colour there by testing what I think looks nice. I ask for input from Marika too and then I finish up. There's not much else to say on the process, Its pretty straightforward.  Here's an example of the space apple after its finished.

Well I hope you enjoyed reading about this look into my art process. Its probably very underwhelming...I hope you stay excited about the release of Deep Space Diner in the coming months. I'll hobble away into my hole and keep my work up until release or until I am needed here again. Look forward to Marika's next Devlog coming sometime soon! Thanks for reading!
